Domestic Violence Offenses

County: Madison
Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the number of domestic violence offenses reported by law enforcement.

Why is this important?

Domestic violence occurs when one person in an intimate relationship uses physical violence to control or dominate the other person. It can happen inside or outside the home, and can occur among couples of all backgrounds. In families that experience domestic violence, children are oftentimes also abused; even children who have not been targeted themselves but who witness domestic violence tend to develop emotional, behavioral, and academic problems. Children raised in violent family environments are at risk of becoming victims or abusers themselves as they grow older.
Many domestic violence incidents--especially domestic sexual violence--are never reported to law enforcement. The incidents that are reported to law enforcement may represent those that are the most serious and that require the most attention from public safety officials.
